Top of Form 1 Date: 1995/08/12 In addition to my post yesterday, I sent a note to George Wu who collects many, many lists of recommendations on many, many different topics asking if he had one on dentists (I knew he had to ... I was right). Here it is: ----------- Paul Nagai: tori@netcom.com ============================================== From georgewu@netcom.comFri Aug 11 06:51:51 1995 Date: Fri, 11 Aug 1995 00:11:46 -0700 From: George J Wu To: tori@netcom.com Subject: Re: Dentists Hi Paul, I'm afraid my consulting business is doing well enough that I simply don't have time to spare for much news. But I do indeed have a list of dentist recommendations, albeit a tad dated. It's probably the most frequently asked recommendation, so I'm not suprised folks have been asking. George ============================================================================== From: georgew@metasw.com (George J Wu) Date: April 2, 1993 Organization: Meta-Software, Campbell, CA First off, here's my usual plug for Bay Area Consumer's Checkbook. It's a local version of Consumer Reports, and among other things, they've recently evaluated dentists. Subscribe (52 Sylvan Way, Oakland, CA 94610-1051, 415-397-8305 [I wonder why they have an Oakland office and a 415 area code]) or check your local library. No, I'm not affiliated with them in any way. On to my personal recommendations. I'm currently happy with Dr. Mits Fukumura, up in the Stanford medical complex in Palo Alto, 415-321-3399. I chose him based upon his ratings in Consumer's Checkbook. I've only used him for my regular cleanings. He and his staff quickly pointed out a condition I've always had, and are taking a very proactive approach to keep it in it's currently minor-problem state. Otherwise, he and his staff are completely professional yet friendly. My old dentist in Berkeley (before I moved down here) is Dr. Roger Ota, 2020 Hearst Ave., Berkeley, CA 94709, 510-841-0662. Dr. Ota's practically the company dentist where I used to work. I know two people who *didn't* like him, but I must know five times that many people who like him as much as I do. I found him very friendly, albeit very busy. It's a little hard to get appointments with less than a month's notice, and the dental assistants do most of the work. Those assistants are also very friendly. If you have a comment, question, or problem, they (assistant and doctor) will to your description, ask a few questions, and suggest a recourse. ============================================================================== From: uday@adobe.com (Uday Kurkure) Subject: Re: Looking for Dentist in NW San Jose Date: 22 Jan 93 18:28:37 GMT Organization: Adobe Systems Incorporated Dr. Madireddi in Saratoga is an excellent dentist. I have since left for NASA, but still stay with his office since I have always liked their service. (unfortunately now I have no dental coverage and I think they are not exactly the cheapest around). Dr. Lowe is cordial and proficient. I also like my dental hygenist, Sue Bryson who works in that office. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Curtiss N Abbott, DDS Medical Village of Saratoga 12948 Village Drive Building 3 Suite E Saratoga, Ca 95070 (408) 255-8411 He's near the corner of Saratoga and Cox. From: kenj@blackfur.esd.sgi.com (Ken Jones) Well, I just started going to Dr. Fred Hirai in Cupertino. So far, I've received only an exam and a cleaning, but that's about to change. :-( So far I've been very pleased with him. He performed a very thorough examination and afterwards discussed exactly what he found, and his recommended treatments, making sure that I understood everything as he went along. I can't comment on the quality of his lab's work on items such as crowns, though. Still, he camse highly recommended to me by a couple of my friends. Of course, your mileage may vary... From: ddh@earth.esd.sgi.com (Daniel Hachigian) My recommendation is to see: Michael Kobal, DDS, PhD 747 Altos Oaks Dr. Los Altos, CA 94024 (415) 948-5600 He's very bright, having a PhD in Chemistry in addition to his dental degree. He seems to be happiest when confronted with a real challenge. I was originally referred to him by somebody who was very impressed by the degree of craftsmanship that he put into doing some crown work. I've never had the need to really test his abilities, but everything I've seen leads me to believe that he understands quality. From: story@sgi.com (David (Duis) Story) I strongly recommend Dr. Michael Heneveld, in Burlingame right next to the town hall. 415/343-1104. I've been seeing him for about 5 years now. He used to do lab work himself, and has an excellent relationship with his lab (in part because he owns their building and equipment!). He also cured me of needle-phobia: I've had several fillings and a root canal and never once had any problems with poor aim or painful injections. This was a serious problem for me in the past as I am resistant to novocaine-derivatives. From: davep@paladin.corp.sgi.com (David Packer) Here are two dentists that are good. Steven C. Marshall,D.D.S. 689 E. Remington Dr. Sunnyvale - (408)245-2444 R. Wayne Martin, D.D.S. 777 Cuesta Dr. St#110 Mt. View - (415)967-2391 My Fiancee is a hygenist and works for both of them. She is really top notch(no bias really!), and gets recommendations all the time. From: yamauchi@ronin2.mti.sgi.com (Alan Yamauchi) I'd recommend seeing Dr Ronald Hirose in Sunnyvale. He's right off of Knickerbocker and El Camino. I've been seeing him for 10+ years and have no reason to even consider switching. He's the only dentist I've ever seen that I feel comfortable with when sitting in the chair. My wife, who also doesn't like to see dentists, is quite pleased with Dr. Hirose. He does all the work himself including his administrative stuff, like scheduling. He's very personable and always takes the time to explain what he's doing. I've recommended him to a number of people and they've all been pleased with his work. From: bob@netcom.com (Bob Becker) Try Robert Turner on Welch Road near Stanford. I've been going to him for about 20 years now, and I couldn't be more satisfied. He stresses prevention, is very easy to get along with, and really respects his patients. I'm not sure he's accepting new patients so you might have to use my name to get in if you're interested. His number is 415-321-7270. I've referred amny people to him over the years, and I think they're all still patients. From: gloria@golden (Gloria Ackley) I saw your posting on the network. I recently went to Dr.Weiner for a dental cleaning and two fillings. One was very deep to the pulpa, so potentially could have been very painful, or possibly a root canal. He gave be the Nitrous Oxide I wanted, and used the correct dosage of Novacaine, so I stayed comfortable throughout the procedure. He listened to my terror at having been to a previous dentist who had done poor work and had hurt me. Dr. Weiner proved to be very gentle and technically competent at his job. I liked his hygentist also. He has 2 hygentists. It takes about 20 minutes to get to his office from SGI. Dr. Harvey Weiner 1171 Homestead Santa Clara (downtown) 408-244-3562 Note: I REALLY hate to go to the dentist too, so I know how hard it is to chose one. From: dcrocker@udel.asd.sgi.com (Dave Crocker) I use a guy named Luhman, in Sunnyvale (on Fremont, a bit south of 85. I like him in spite of the fact that he keeps finding work to do. I.e., he's relatively aggressive (but polished/smooth (pun?) at lining his pockets, but his work is good and the work really does seem to be necessary. His Hygenist is the best I've found anywhere. From: ml@hunter.corp.sgi.com (Mike Lavigne) I recommend Dean Clark in Palo Alto. He has a practice located in the Midtown Dental Building on Middlefield Road. He is extremely thorough, very patient, and has exceptional hygienists on his staff. He can be reached at 415-326-5861. From: Steve.Kracha@Corp.Sun.COM (Steve Kracha) I have used dr Kleinrath in Redwood City for the past 7 years and I think he is probably the best I have ever had. He treats you great, and everyone is important to him. When you have even minor work done, ie filling, cap, he will call you at home later that night to make sure you are feeling ok. He called me once after a root canal and I told him it still hurt alot, he phoned in a new and stronger prescription to the pharmacy and I had it an hour later. This was late at night. Everyone I have sent to him over the years still uses him. His phone # is 415-365-6900 From: jbarnes@chicago.asd.sgi.com (Janice Barnes) I highly recommend my dentist, Dr. Neal Smith. I've been going to him for at least 7 years. He's pain free and everyone in the office is really nice. He's on Second St. in Loas Altos at 948-0200. From: pravin@tanga.esd.sgi.com (Pravin R Shah) My sister is a great Dentist and lot of SGI people go to her. DR. USHA G. SHAH (408) 263 2252 Her office is in Milpitas: 371 Jacklin road. From: uday@mv.us.adobe.com (Uday Kurkure) You may try Dr. Madireddi in Saratoga. She is a great dentist. Her number is 408-741-5113. From: desmond@raven.wpd.sgi.com (Ellen Desmond) I'm on the MIDA plan. My dentist is in San Mateo, his name is George Wolff. I like him, but he's a bit of a drive.... From: amyk@bonbon.corp.sgi.com (Amy Kieraldo) I recommend Dr. Steven Keller, located in Palo Alto at the P.A. Dental Building. He is very gental and explains everything well. He will even stop if you ask during a proceedure so that you can rest. (I too do not like denists.) His assistant is wonderful too. Another nice aspect about going to a dental clinic is that you can select from nearly a dozen or so different hygenists. I would recommend setting up a meeting with him so that you can meet him before going to see him. Call me if you would like more information. 3-5196 From: Laurie Sefton The closest I've come to the perfect dentist is Benson Kanemoto in Palo Alto. He's in the book (don't have his business card at hand). He's taken care of some weirdness in my mouth (20 year old "temp" fillings that my previous dentist never replaced, referring me to a *great* oral surgeon for extracting impacted wisdom teeth --they never came in and decided to move sideways in my mouth). He's also good for mouthguards (I play hockey) and the like. From: randolph@netcom.com (Randolph Fritz) My mother and me have had good experiences with Dr. Clifford Coolidge in Sunnyvale, 408-736-4344--his office is 20 minutes from Mountain View, his rates are reasonable, and he seems to do a good job. From: aim@belle.esd.sgi.com (Amy Sloniker) I have referred a number of happy mouths to Dr. Cliff Coolidge in Sunnyvale. Dr. Coolidge is thorough, gentle and very patient, and explains everything very well. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences with he and his staff. You can reach him at (408) 736-4344. From: beth@sgi.com (Beth Van Eman) I have been going to Dr. Hirai for about five years now, and have been very pleased (though I hesitated to make a recommendation for anything "perfect"). In that time I've had one filling and one crown, and I think he did a good job on both. The crown is my first, so I don't have much to compare it to, except other people's complaints. I don't experience any sensitivity to hot and cold where the crown is, for what that's worth..... He did a good job of matching it to the rest of my teeth in both shape and color, so it looks like a real tooth, feels like a real tooth. From: Ted Matsumura My dentist Jayson Tsuchiya, DDS in Sunnyvale is *very* good. From: davem@wiretap.spies.com (Dave Mathis) Two data points (my wife and me): Jenay Katowsky 736-3882 Corner of Fremont & Mary(?) in Sunnyvale From: 6942150@lmsc5.is.lmsc.lockheed.com My dentist is in Los Gatos out near Good Samaritan Hospital. His name is Dr. Dennis Wong. I have been going to him for about 10 years now. He's the best dentist I've ever had... I've gone through some good ones and some bad ones. He's always on schedule, he takes care of the insurance forms for me, and if I ever have an emergency, he's willing to see me during non-business hours. His hygenist is great too. I've never gotten out of there with a sore mouth because it's been beaten up. I went through braces with him, needing a night guard because I grind my teeth. He also recommended me to a great oral surgeon when I needed my wisdom teeth pulled... minimal swelling. It just looked like I gained about 5 pounds. The thing I really like about Dr. Wong is that he is sensitive to his patients needs. When he has to give you a novacaine shot, he uses a topical anestetic so you don't feel the needle going in. He also has walkmans and tapes to listen to if you want. The receptionist is also good at making sure you remember your appointments... my whole family goes to him. His number is 408-356-8188. He's on Bascom Avenue south of Camden. Good luck finding a good dentist... it took our family a long time to find Dr. Wong when our last good one retired. Oh, and Dr. Wong is young, so he won't be retiring soon... another plus as far as I'm concerned! From: dmoor@skisquaw.corp.sgi.com (David Moor) Roland Kumagai, DDS in Palo Alto. He's sometimes hard to get scheduled, as he gets so many referrals, but is always available (usually the same day) for emergencies (cracked tooth). When my crown didn't fit (I didn't know it did not fit, he said just said "that's not right, I'm sending it back to the lab."). According to the nurse, he has fixed crowns that fail 5+ years after he has put them in cause "if it was put in correctly in the first place, it should not fail." (no charge). Always sees me right away for emergencies (cracked tooth, etc.) From: yobs@eol.csd.sgi.com (Donna Derby Yobs) I go to Dr Leonard Fu on El Monte. He is wonderful, very kind & gentle, his wife specializes in kids, so she may be a better option. if you are interested I can look up his number. From: lruben@persian.csd.sgi.com (Lara Ruben) You didn't mention what area you lived in - if Fremont isn't too far out of the way, Dr. Glenn McCormick on Stevenson Blvd is excellent. I am a *major* dento-phobe myself and he is the best dentist I've ever had. I have had a crown done by him also, which you said you were specifically interested in. From: trish@napa.esd.sgi.com (Trish Leeper) I have a great recommendation for you: Dr. Patrick McEvoy (415) 969-2600. He is located right behind El Camino Hospital. (about 10 minutes from SGI). He is extremely charming, has a great staff and I've enjoyed and benefited, information wise, from him in just a few visits. - I've not had anything major done though. He comes highly recommended by my sister also - she is a hygenist and been in the business for years. From: kellyw@uclady.corp.sgi.com (Kelly Walsh) Try Dr. Thomas B. Dusel. He is at 1250 Oakmead Parkway, Suite 114. It's near Lawrence and 101, so it's fairly convenient to SGI. 408-730-4498 I've known him for about 20 years, and I'm 26 years old. He is a terrific person as well as a very competent dentist. Never had a problem at all. From: geoff@netcom.com (Geoffrey Leach) I've been going to Peter Hansen -- office on El Camino between Embarcadero and California -- for a number of years now. He's done a number of crowns for me (sigh!) and I've had no problems whatsoever. Also, he referred me for a root canal, and that dentist was completely satisfactory. From all this I conclude that his standards are high. He also has an office in SF, if that's of any use. From: mikef@informix.com (Mike Foreman) I can recommend a dentist that has been the best I've ever used. He has replaced for free a cracked ceramic crown that was either the labs or manufacturers fault. He is Brent Gorrell at 970 West El Camino in Sunnyvale, near Mary. Phone 408-736-1341. From: Marlyn Johnson I would like to recommend Dr. Timothy Leary 625 Menlo Ave. Menlo Park (328-8544). I've had teeth capped and crowned with no problems. He is a PERFECTIONIST. One Saturday morning (office was closed) he took care of a unexpected painful root canal within a half hour of my calling him at home. He met me at his office to relieve my suffering. He is young but he has been my dentist for at least ten years. Feel free to mention my name if you have difficulty getting an appointment. From: jmasters@ariela.Eng.Sun.COM (Joan Masters) I heartily recommend Dr. Gennaro Malzone in San Jose. He's on 1660 Hillsdale Avenue, between Leigh and Meridian Avenue. His phone is (408) 267-1660. I'm chicken-little when it comes to going to the dentist. My entire family has gone to him for years (youngsters, young marrieds, and oldsters). He is skilled, conscientious and worked with me to get a crown just right last year. My grandson fell and broke some teeth; Dr. M. saw him right away. My elderly mother-in-law was recuperating from a stroke and needed a rough place on her dentures repaired (not done by Dr. Malzone); he took her of her. The staff is friendly, if you are a wimp (like me) he'll use a topical anesthetic before giving injections, or use gas if you prefer. Billings are handled professionally. From: carlr@ripper.esd.sgi.com (Carl Rendell) I think that I have a really great dentist for you! Dr. Buddak (sorry the number is at home :-) is the best dentist I have ever been to. I recently sent my wife to him, and she is really particular when it comes to these guys since here cousin is a dentist. The office is really close to work. It is on Hollenbeck just off of Holmstead road in Sunnyvale. You just have to hop on 85 and viola...your there. You can check information, or send me E-Mail if you need the number. The receptionist Kim is also very nice. From: garyj@pyramid.com (Gary Johnson) Try Dr. Steven Bo in Sunnyvale. He's located right next to Serra (sp) park in Sunnyvale. I've been a happy patient for >10 years. Real convenient to 280. From: steve@net.bio.net (Steve Barnhouse) I can recommend Dr. Kumagai in Palo Alto, near the California Ave. train station. It's a relatively large practice, and I've seen 3 doctors over the past 8 years, but they've all been very professional and competent. Dr. Kumagai is the main doctor, and he is very good. Dr. Kato is younger, but also very good. From: ahearn@Cadence.COM (John Ahearn) I have been extremely satisfied with my dentist. His name is Dr. Coolidge, and he is located at 500 East Remington (suite 22) in Sunnyvale. His # is 408-739-4344. Hope this helps. From: lisas@qualix.com (Lisa Salazar) I know this might be a little far but, Dr Kotin in San Mateo is great. He is kind, gentle and does what he can to save a tooth. Check him out. ============================================================================== From: dlow@svale.hp.com (Danny Low) Subject: Re: anyone recommend a dentist near Mountain View? I have an EXCELLENT dentist who's a prosthodontist (specialist in bridges and crowns). He has an office in Sunnyvale and a new office at Union Square in SF, and teaches at UCSF. His name's Sung Je Hong, and his Sunnyvale office number is 408 749 9888. I have a mouthful of crowns myself, and I think it's important to go to a good prosthodontist rather than a general dentist. She's young, and I imagine will only get better. But she's not "great" by any means. Now my experience before her has been only with dentists that have been doing their work for 30+ years. The kind whose hands know what they're doing even before the brain engages. She's got a long way to go. I was put off by the way she answered one of my questions. When she was drilling one cavity, I asked what shape hole she was trying to make, and why. She told me she was trying to make the sides vertical and the bottom flat, but she said she could lend me one of her books if I wanted to know why. I suspect she didn't know, and I would have preferred that 1) she did know and gave me an explanation, and 2) if she didn't, she would just say so. Pretty minor as complaints go. The dentist: Dr. Kirshner DDS, 1565 Hollenbeck Ave #120, Sunnyvale, CA What happened: I went for a basic checkup. I checked before to see if they accepted my insurance, and they said it would be no problem. They specifically said that after I made the co-payment of $40 everything in a checkup would be covered. I got this from the receptionist/secretary and the doctor himself. I was asked to come back for a full x-ray, since I hadn't have one for 10 years, again promising I would pay nothing this service. When I got the bill, it was over $428. My checkup was listed as an emergency visit. I called, and the receptionist said they listed it that way so the insurance company pays more. After that, it turns out my insurance company only pays about 50% of these bills. What can I do to complain about this? I've called several times and they won't discuss the bill or let me even talk to the doctor. I'm calling my insurance company today. Who else can I contact? I'm thinking Better Business Bureau.
