GUWAHTATI, Nov 23 - Kaziranga National Park has been selected for the prestigious Rs 2 lakh Millennium Award of the
WWF-Tiger Conservation Programme for being one of the best managed parks.
The award was given to Kaziranga National Park for total commitment exhibited by park personnel to save its wildlife against fury of
floods, poachers etc. The selection panel noted that despite the adversity population of rhino, tiger and other wildlife have thrived in the
national park.

were 4,802 persons with a 16,842 livestock
population living in the forest. More than half of
these families were moved out under a
relocation plan which continued till 1986.
Today, the human heads have once again
reached the 4,000-mark and, more importantly,

Simlipal records increase in elephant population
BARIPADA, Nov 12: The Simlipal Tiger Reserve, a safe haven for
elephants in Orissa, has recorded 5.4 per cent increase in
pachyderm population in last five years, according to a latest
census report. The 1999 elephant census said the Simlipal Tiger
Reserve along with its north and south corridors harbour is now a
home of 518 elephants. The reserve had 491 elephants in 1994,

N-E timber scam; CBI probe also ordered

Affairs (MHA) has unearthed a Rs 400-crore
timber scam in the north-eastern states and
suspended Avinash Kumar, Chief Conservator of
Forests, Arunachal Pradesh, for alleged
corruption. Kumar was suspended on October 6
and Union Home Secretary Kamal Pande has
ordered a CBI inquiry directing that the alleged
involvement of `several politicians,' including

34% of reserve forest in WB brought under protected category
CALCUTTA, OCT 2: Thirty four per cent of the reserve forest in West
Bengal has been declared as protected area, principal secretary
of West Bengal Forest Department Chandra Sekhar Samal said.

Polluting India?s groundwater
Sep 1: INDIA?S GROUNDWATER is being polluted by numerous factories that directly pump untreated effluents into the ground through dry borewells. The most worrying is the presence of mercury in groundwater. Down To Earth and the Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi, got samples of groundwater from eight places in three States: Haryana, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. The samples were analysed at the Facility for Ecological and Analytical Testing (FEAT) of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur.
Tusker menace turns grave in greater Tezpur
TEZPUR, Aug 23: A herd of wild tuskers are creating havoc in different parts of greater Tezpur in
Sonitpur district and have damaged a good number of dwelling houses and other properties.
According to an eyewitness, in Bambasseria, Muslimgaon, Madarguri and Konaiborachuk on August 17 night the

Protest against Govt move on Muga Farm

MUMBAI, AUG 17: The insatiable demand from Delhi-based gutkha
manufacturers has drastically shrunk the cover of Khair and other trees in
Thane district, with no let-up in the timber-mafia's activities here.
Attention turned to the district several years ago since Khair trees, a

Wildlifer Deb Roy passes away
New Delhi, August 16: Mr Sanjay Deb Roy, a member of the steering committee of Project Tiger and the Indian Board
for Wildlife, died at AIIMS in the Capital on Monday. He was 65, and is survived by his wife and two sons.

create the largest tiger habitat in the country covering more than 5,000 square
kilometres in central India. The mega tiger reserve is to be built by creating new
tiger reserves and linking old ones. India has 60 per cent of the global tiger

Forest officials told not to return confiscated vehicles
Meerut, August 5 (S. Raju): In a landmark decision, the government has ordered that those
vehicles and weapons, which are confiscated for offences against wildlife, will be treated as
government property and would not be returned to the offenders even after compounding the case.

Plastic litter causes death of hogdeer in zoo
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A hogdeer in the city zoo died on Friday after it ate a
polythene bag abandoned by some visitors. A mass of 1.25 kg of plastic waste was
extricated from the animal's abdomen during the postmortem.
