asci.org: Indian Wildlife Home Page

Research:
Provide funds, resources and networking for high quality surveys and research that lead to preliminary documentation, urgent data generation and solutions for innovative management strategies for specific protected areas. The beneficiaries of such assistance would range from researchers and students to park directors, park specific NGO's and local village communities.

Education:
Provide financial and material support for workshops and seminars specifically geared toward educating and training protected area personnel and the local population. Support will preferentially be provided for programs that enhance awareness and motivation and result in improved technical skill and conflict-resolution abilities of lower level staff (watchers, guards, foresters and rangers) and local people. ASCI is also committed to identifying institutions and organizations capable of providing these services. ASCI would also like to promote the use of the local populations knowledge for better management of the protected area, curbing poaching and implementing various conservation plans.

Direct support for PA's:
Provide financial and material support for meeting urgent needs of a particular protected area. Beneficiaries would include PA staff and local communities. Such assistance would include provision of equipment ( Binoculars, clothing, stationary, wireless sets etc) to special medical assistance and insurance coverage and recognition of dedication and merit through awards and stipends. Recognition of persons from the local communities who contribute to protection and conflict resolution of park-people issues would receive special attention, besides maintenance of informers against anticipated poaching. Internet and computer services would be a special feature to facilitate rapid communication and processing of proposals for assistance.

Land Acquisition:
Raise funds for lease and acquisition of revenue and private lands that form crucial corridors and critical habitats. This is to ensure that future land use change does not endanger the ecological functions of such areas. However, access of local people to resources within such areas would be restricted insofar as they directly threaten the integrity of these areas.

Support for Litigations:
Provide emergency funds for filing cases against wildlife traders and poachers and for public interest litigation against development threats to specific protected areas.

Coordination & Networking with NGOs:
Agencies such as AID and ASHA may be undertaking development projects in areas where there may be a need to design the projects to ensure sustainability of local resource use and minimize or eliminate conflicts with ecological attributes of the area. The services of ecologists, naturalists and environmental specialists would be placed at the disposal of these groups to ensure that ill planned development does not threaten wild life and forest resources.
