Undergraduates.
Summer Opportunities Bulletin Board
This bulletin board is a summary listing of summer-opening announcements received by ECE faculty. It is neither a complete, nor necessarily current, listing of summer openings, but it may provide useful search information. You should also investigate the Independent Study and Undergraduate Research page in this Guide, the Duke Undergraduate Research Support Office page, together with its links, and summer opportunities available through the Duke Career Center.
Some items in this section refer to prior-year programs, principally because that was the latest information available when the program description was entered. Most programs are ongoing, with current-year offerings, sometimes with slightly changed names. If a program looks interesting, pursue it with diligence and ingenuity!
Programs Offered by Duke
- Outreach Programs of the Pratt School of Engineering. These include the NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program for which participants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. There are several other high impact programs designed to improve K-12 education.
-
Summer Programs at the Duke Marine Laboratory
of the Nicholas School of the Environment in Beaufort, NC.
Summer courses for credit (Summer Term I and
Summer Term II), plus an Integrated
Marine Conservation Program. Scholarships available.
Programs Outside Duke
-
Study Abroad: Energy Tomorrow
A six-week course for engineering students
offered by the University of New South Wales, Australia,
provides an engineering
and management perspective on world energy needs.
Successful completion can transfer two semester course credits
to Duke.
(There are currently no corresponding Duke courses, so these credits
would transfer as EGR888 courses.)
Explore the

including field locations.
Consult Ms.Simmons or Dr.Ybarra for transfer credit information.

National Security Education Program:
The National Security Education Program (NSEP) is a unique scholarship
opportunity for U.S. undergraduates to study abroad. Created in 1991, the
NSEP awards scholarships to American students for study of world regions
critical to U.S. interests (outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and
New Zealand).
It encourages U.S. undergraduates to add an international component to
their education, a feature that is becoming increasingly important
in today's interdependent world.
The NSEP aims to build a strong base of future leaders with expertise in critical areas, as well as professionals in both the public and private sectors who have the international experience and language skills necessary for competitive performance and visionary leadership in the global arena. The program is open to U.S. citizens who are matriculated as undergraduates at U.S. post-secondary institutions. Scholarships are available. Students may study for a six-week summer session, a semester, or a full academic year. Summer study is available to: 1) first-year students and sophomores, and 2)students at all levels who are pursuing courses of study in the applied sciences or engineering. -
NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU):
There are many such programs at different universities.
Explore options using Google or another search engine keying initially on REU together with the principal name of a university near where you might want to spend the summer, or REU and a topic of particular interest.
Each REU student is hired as a full-time research assistant to work on
specific aspects of major on-going research projects.
REU rules obtain: Participants must be citizens or permanent residents
of the United States.
A weekly salary and travel expenses are usually provided.
See the web sites for details and applications.
