Students in our MEng program complete a required internship, gaining real-world experience and industry contacts. Our events bring tech company recruiters to campus: Our master's students participate in both the TechConnect recruiting event, hosted by the Pratt School of Engineering and the Duke Department of Computer Science, and Spring Engineering + Computing Showcase.

Degrees We Offer
Master of Science (MS)
The Master of Science is an advanced engineering degree comprising technical coursework culminating in a final exam, project, or thesis.
It typically takes 1.5 to 2 years to earn the degree. Our ECE MS forms an excellent foundation for a career in industry or academia.
As part of their professional development, MS students take seminars where they are exposed to current topics in applied engineering management and entrepreneurship. You select your path from four areas of concentration:
- Computer Engineering: Including software development and hardware design
- Signal and Information Processing and Robotics: Including Big Data analysis and robot design
- Engineering Physics: Including information physics and metamaterials
- Microelectronics, Photonics and Nanotechnology: Including nanoelectronics and optoelectronics
Master of Engineering (MEng) in Electrical and Computer Engineering
The Master of Engineering (MEng) in Electrical and Computer Engineering is an industry-focused degree comprised of strong technical and business coursework, and an internship.

Master of Engineering (MEng) in Photonics and Optical Sciences
The Master of Engineering (MEng) in Photonics and Optical Sciences is an industry-focused degree comprised of strong technical and business coursework, and an internship.
Students will complete the Core Industry Preparatory Courses and Internship, three technical electives (two of which are selected from similar areas of concentration) and Departmental Requirements including:
- An advanced mathematics course
- Two Optics/Photonics courses
- One technical optics/photonics course from the Duke's biomedical engineering (BME) department and one from the ECE department
Duke Kunshan University: Master of Engineering (MEng) in Electrical and Computer Engineering
Offered in China at Duke Kunshan University, a joint venture of Duke University and Wuhan University.
This two-year master’s degree program is built upon Duke’s Master of Engineering program in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and was designed with Chinese industrial needs in mind—exposing students to U.S.-style education as well as modern Chinese business practices and industry standards.
During the first year, students study at Duke Kunshan University. For their second year, students are expected to study at Duke University in the United States. Upon completion, students receive a Duke Master of Engineering degree.
A unifying theme of Duke's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is its interdisciplinary nature, characterized by significant funded research programs that actively engage Duke faculty from across the Pratt School of Engineering, the sciences and medicine.
The interdisciplinary nature of Duke ECE is well aligned with the increasing international trend toward a breakdown of traditional disciplinary boundaries; such an interdisciplinary focus has also been widely encouraged by industry and government.
