Degree Planning

Degree Requirements:

Minimum course requirements for the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) program are:

WRITING 20, during the first academic year
5 elective Social Sciences or Humanities courses, appropriately distributed
A 6-course mathematics and probability/statistics sequence (MATH 31, 32, 103, 107 & 108; and STA 113 or MATH 135 or ECE 255)
4 natural science courses (CHEM 21L or 31L, PHYSICS 61L & 62L, and BIOLOGY 19, 25L or 147)
2 foundation courses in engineering computation: EGR 53L and COMPSCI 100E or 100
5 foundation courses in electrical engineering: ECE 27L, 51L, 52L, 53L, and 54L
4 approved ECE Concentration Electives, in two different areas with at least two courses in one of the elected areas
2 Elective ECE Courses at the 100-level or above
An approved ECE Design Elective
4 Free Electives

Thirty-four distinct courses are required. An elected course that belongs to more than one requirements category may be counted only once. Questions about Prerequsites, AP Credits, and course seuencing should be discussed with the student's academic advisor or with Dr. Huettel, Dr. Ybarra, or Dean Simmons.

Planning Templates for ECE Majors

The following links provide 4-Year Planning Templates in PDF format for an ECE major and for an ECE major in combination with various second majors, minors or special programs. The templates list the courses required for the named program. Students should use these templates and the sample programs of following sections, in consultation with their ECE Faculty Advisor, to plan and track a viable sequence of courses that will ensure that all course requirements are met. Note that course options for some of the combination programs are more constrained than for the plain-vanilla ECE major.

Each template is a single page of a PDF file containing all of the covered programs. One can go directly to the page for a specific program by clicking on that program in the following lists. The "current page" can be printed (or saved to a file for easy future reference) from Adobe Reader using the print dialog box, of you can download the whole (not-very-large, <200kB) combined PDF file. If you have Adobe Acrobat software (not just Adobe Reader), you can extract individual PDF pages.

Suggestion: Use the printed templets to record which requirements are met by AP credits by placing "AP" in the Semester column of the template and suitable past or expected future dates for the other requirements, and then review this page with your faculty advisor during one of your scheduled advising meeteings.

NOTES:

WRITING 20: University Writing Program, required in first year.
SS-H: Social Sciences & Humanities, 5 required semester-course electives, appropriately distributed.
CHEM 31L: AP credit CHEM 19 is also acceptable. Students who have successfully completed CHEM 21L need not take CHEM 31L.
PHYSICS 61L & 62L: Matriculating students who have AP credit for PHYSICS 61L (but not 62L) take PHYSICS 62L; those who have AP credit for PHYSICS 61L and 62L take PHYSICS 63L; and international students who have IPCs for GCE A-level physics take PHYSICS 63L or 143.
BIOLOGY 25L or 147: AP credit BIOLOGY 19 is also acceptable.
STA 113 is recommended but students may substitute MATH 135 or ECE 255. If ECE 255 is elected it may not simultaneiously also count as an ECE Concentration Elective, ECE Elective, or Approved ECE Design Elective.
ECE Concentration Electives: Four courses selected from the set approved for the ECE program. Courses must be selected from at least two areas, and at least two courses must be from the same area.
ECE Elective: Any ECE course at the 100 level or above except ECE 148L, which latter course may be taken as as a general Elective.
Approved ECE Design Elective: Approved Electrical & Computer Engineering Design Elective, required in Senior year or in Junior year for students with senior status. Currently ECE 123, 135, 154, 164, 251 and 261 are approved. The elected design course may not simultaneously also count as an ECE Concentration Elective or ECE Elective, but any of these courses not selected as the design course may be considered for ECE Electives or ECE Concentration Electives.
Independent Study: Accepted for up to two of the Elective ECE Courses and for any of the Free Electives, but not for any other required course in the ECE Program.
